I just learned about a book written by Noah Webster called History of the United States and published in 1832. This makes it a primary source for American history - it was written during the lifetime of eyewitnesses who could have disputed it (important since there is so much disputable "history" today). I was told that it is excellent and easy reading and would make a good family read for America's 250th.
Can you say who said this without looking it up? "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
