Do you have a garden or are you growing any food? We haven't bought any vegetables since March - eating lots of veggies entirely out of our gardens. This spring we tried heat-tolerant varieties of cool-season crops and they are finally reaching end of harvest as the warm-season crops are starting to produce more.
High-Desert Homesteading
Chickens are often called the homestead "gateway animal" because they're so easy to care for and they can provide eggs and meat. But they can also do work for you such as pest control, make compost, spread mulch, build soil and more. Backyard chickens can be managed to dramatically reduce the amount of processed feed you have to buy while creating healthy, happy, fit birds.
That's the description for a webinar I did a few years ago. It contains a lot of valuable info that can save you a lot of time and money. It is a private video that I have never shared before and can only be viewed with this link: Ultra-Productive Chickens with Chris Stevens https://youtu.be/WPb76urRslU

Someone said the problem with permaculture is it creates too much abundance. Trying to grow anything on the high desert makes me think that would be a good problem to have. Have you tried any permaculture techniques?
